Diabetes is a growing global health concern, and the statistics are alarming. According to the CDC, 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. has prediabetes, yet 84% remain undiagnosed. Diabetes itself affects more than 1 in 10 Americans and costs the nation over $327 billion annually. Globally, diabetes prevalence has quadrupled in the last 40 years, now impacting nearly half a billion people, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
In response to this critical issue, Lakay Acces Sante (LAS) and Jefferson Park Ministries hosted an educational workshop on November 15, 2024, to raise awareness about diabetes within the Haitian community. The workshop aimed to promote a better understanding of the disease, share effective preventive measures, and provide guidance on access to management and support services.
This activity is part of a series of initiatives in the “Promoting the Health of New Haitian Immigrants in New Jersey” project, which aims to improve health equity and outcomes for underserved communities. LAS is deeply grateful to the Horizon Foundation for New Jersey for supporting this important project financially.
The event brought together 17 Haitian immigrants who actively engaged in the session. Participants expressed genuine satisfaction with the information provided and gratitude for the opportunity to learn about ways to take control of their health.
Together, we can combat diabetes through awareness, prevention, and support.
