Session 2 Recap — Monitoring Our Mental Health

15 participants. One safe space. A powerful conversation.
Last Sunday, we gathered online for our second Mental Health & Wellness session, led by Dr. Davia Titus-Thomas of Peace of Mind Mental Health & Wellness LLC. Together, we explored what it really means to care for our minds — as Haitian immigrants, as families, as a community.

What we covered in Session 2:

  • The immigrant experience — Homesickness, language barriers, worry about status and family separation: real pressures, not weaknesses.
  • Recognizing the signs — How distress shows up in Haitian culture: through the body, through silence, through spiritual language.
  • The 2-week rule — If symptoms last 2 weeks or more — sadness, fatigue, withdrawal — don't wait. Reach out.
  • 5 daily practices — Check in with yourself, track your mood, listen to your body, talk to someone, notice patterns.

Menm jan kò nou bezwen swen, lespri nou bezwen swen tou. — Just as our body needs care, our mind needs care too.

We also talked about how faith and family are powerful tools — and how they work best alongside professional care, not instead of it. Seeking help is not a sign of weakness. Mande èd se yon fòs.
