LAS Hosts 3rd Annual Community Health & Wellness Event Focused on Sickle Cell Disease Awareness
NEWARK, NJ — July 26, 2026 — Lakay Accès Santé Services (LAS) held its 3rd Annual Community Health and Wellness Event on Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at New Bethany Haitian Baptist Church in Newark. This year's event centered on Sickle Cell Disease Awareness, offering free health screenings, education, and resources to community members.
The event was made possible through the support of key community partners, including MEND, the Newark Health Department, Community Wellness through the Mary Eliza Mahoney Health Center, Fidelis Care, Handz On Lab Solutions, and New Bethany Haitian Baptist Church.
Attendees had access to a wide range of services, including:
- A Sickle Cell Disease Awareness presentation by Dr. Phygenia Nimoh
- Blood pressure, blood sugar, and HIV screenings
- Comprehensive blood work for cardiovascular risk assessment by Handz On Lab Solutions, including HbA1c, Lp(a), lipid panel, and liver and kidney function tests
- Health insurance application assistance through Fidelis Care, Get-Covered NJ, and Medicaid programs
- Medical appointment scheduling through the Mary Eliza Mahoney Health Center for medical, dental, eye, and mental health consultations
- Distribution of health education materials, giveaways, and community resources
In addition to health services, LAS provided refreshments and distributed hygiene kits, gift cards, and fresh produce donated by MEND. Staff and volunteers also conducted outreach on community services and upcoming events.
The event also marked a special milestone: the celebration of 15 students who successfully completed LAS's most recent English as a Second Language (ESL) course session, held from March through June 2026. Their achievement was recognized in front of the community they worked so hard to serve and grow within.

Handz On Lab Solutions delivered comprehensive cardiovascular lab work at no cost to participants. New Bethany Haitian Baptist Church opened its doors and provided the welcoming space that made it all possible. LAS looks forward to future events serving the Newark community.
